What’s Going On With Olivia Munn and Ms. Rachel?

People magazine knew exactly what they were doing when they pulled out a quote from Olivia Munn’s June 4 cover story about the Über-popular children’s show host Ms. Rachel into a separate post a few days later. “I know kids love [Ms. Rachel], but the thing is, if I can’t watch it, I’m not going to spend the rest of my life going crazy. These kid shows drive me crazy,” Munn told the magazine in the breakout June 8 article, titled “Olivia Munn Doesn’t Let Her Kids Watch Ms. Rachel. Here’s Why (Exclusive).” The innocent-enough comment is now difficult to find because People deleted the article on June 11 “due to the violent threats that escalated towards the interview subject and her family.”

Ms. Rachel, for those who don’t follow, has been an outspoken advocate for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, and Munn’s comment was interpreted to some as a dig at one of the few good people on the internet right now. Ms. Rachel — real name Rachel Griffin-Accurso — responded to the People article on June 9 by redirecting the conversation toward Gaza. “WHO CARES?! I’d rather you cover me advocating for kids in Gaza who are literally starving, largest cohort of child amputees in modern history, thousands & thousands killed – no medical care, no education, no homes… do better!!!” she wrote. “Not against [Munn] at all and don’t care that she doesn’t want to watch the show – all my love to her and her family – disappointed in the outlets.”

Munn addressed the article and Ms. Rachel’s response via Instagram Story on June 11. “To Ms Rachel and her fans, I hear and respect the passion behind your support. I never anticipated the media would single out one small thing I said and distort it like they have,” she wrote. “I don’t want something taken out of context to be a moment that steals even a minute of joy for anyone.”

But things didn’t end there. On June 11, Munn’s husband, John Mulaney, also chimed in via Instagram Story. “An innocent comment my wife Olivia Munn made about what children’s programs we like has somehow -unbelievably- been conflated with not caring about the deaths of children in Gaza,” he wrote. “Because of this, my wife and my two kids are now receiving violent and threatening comments and messages in her DMs… this kind of behavior isn’t activism.” Ms. Rachel reiterated Mulaney’s call for closure: “Please be kind to Olivia & her precious family! I don’t believe in hate, attacks or hurtful comments,” adding that “her and I have been in touch and we are both choosing kindness.” That, class, is conflict resolution.
