Poker Face season two ends with human lie detector Charlie (Natasha Lyonne) hitching a ride to Wichita, Kansas, but are viewers going to be able to join her? Despite being one of its buzziest originals, the series has not yet been renewed by network Peacock for a third season. Created by Knives Out’s Rian Johnson, the show has unique sets and locations for every episode — not to mention it guest stars everybody from Cynthia Erivo to Kumail Nanjiani to Melanie Lynskey — so it’s definitely not cheap. All that would be fine if ratings were great. While Poker Face made it into the Nielsen streaming top ten this season on the week of May 5 through 11, after premiering on May 8 with 497 million minutes of viewership, it has not been in the top ten since.
Still, the season finale leaves fans with lots to anticipate. It caps off with a literal fake-out cliffhanger, when Patti Harrison’s Alex threatens to drive both herself and Charlie off into the Grand Canyon after revealing that she’s been lying to Charlie about her identity (which shouldn’t be possible, given the whole “human lie detector” thing). Then, the show freeze-frames, Thelma & Louise style, as the car rockets off the cliff before backing up to show how Charlie survives by barrel rolling out of the car at the last moment, while Alex plummets to her presumed death. Charlie hitchhikes to Wichita, but then, when Taylor Schilling’s Agent Annie looks at the car, hoping to find the now on-the-run Charlie, there’s nobody there. No matter the ratings, if a show has the potential to have more Patti Harrison, then the people deserve to see more Patti Harrison. Give us another season of Alex!
