Stephen Colbert may have lost a show, but he won an Emmy. Earlier this year, CBS canceled The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, garnering criticism from those who felt it was to appease Donald Trump in order to get the Skydance and Paramount merger through the FCC. Now, Colbert got a chance to clap back at his network and at Trump while giving a speech on CBS, but he was entirely too classy to name names. When Colbert arrived onstage, the entire room chanted “Stephen! Stephen!” In his speech, Colbert said that when he started The Late Show, “I kinda wanted to do a late-night comedy show that was about love. I don’t know if I figured that out, but at a certain point, and you can guess what that point was, it became a late-night comedy show about loss.”

Earlier in the night, Colbert presented Best Actor in a Comedy Series and also acknowledged the cancellation. “While I have your attention, is anyone hiring?” he said. “Because I’ve got 200 very qualified candidates with me here tonight — who will be available in June — I also brought my own résumé here tonight. I haven’t had a chance to update my headshot in a bit, but I think it still works. I am in there somewhere — after I get back from Istanbul, I’m sure. I only have the one, so Harrison Ford, could you get this to Spielberg?” Hey, we’d watch that movie.
