Spaceballs 2 Is Coming!

Never before has there been a better use of the famous Star Wars crawl — except, of course, the opening of Spaceballs. On June 12, comedy legend Mel Brooks posted a clip to X summarizing the last 38 years of blockbuster cinema in the style of the classic sci-fi opening, and it culminated in a thrilling reveal. “Thirty-eight years ago, there was only one Star Wars trilogy,” the clip begins. “But since then, there have been … a prequel trilogy, a sequel trilogy, a sequel to the prequel, a prequel to the sequel, countless TV spinoffs, a movie spinoff of the TV spinoff which is both a prequel and a sequel. Not to mention … 2 Dunes, 7 Jurassic Parks, 2 Avatars plus 3 Avatars making 5 Avatars …” Finally, after a comically exhaustive inventory of movie and TV franchises, the teaser gets to the point: “But in thirty-eight years, there has only been one … SPACEBALLS. Until now …”

Brooks, Bill Pullman, and Rick Moranis — in his long-awaited return to the screen — will all be reprising their original roles, per Deadline; Keke Palmer will reportedly be joining the trio. This is the first public update about the Spaceballs follow-up since June 2024, when it was announced that Josh Gad, Benji Samir, and Dan Hernandez would write the script; Josh Greenbaum was attached to direct; and Gad would star. While there’s no release date yet, Brooks’s teaser confirms that the film will receive a theatrical release. And lest you think this revival is purely fan service, the legendary director of the original stresses otherwise at the end of his teaser. “After 40 years, we asked: ‘What do the fans want?’” he says. “Instead, we’re making this movie.”
