Shah Rukh Khan lost Sarfarosh to Aamir Khan despite being the original choice

In an interview with Indian Express, Sarfarosh director John Matthew Matthan stated that the makers were not keen to cast Aamir Khan; instead, they wanted Shah Rukh Khan in the film. It so happened that Manmohan Shetty, who owned Adlabs, had already funded two films starring Shah Rukh Khan, namely Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and English Babu Desi Mem. He insisted John to take SRK as that way money would be saved, and the three of them could make a deal. However, John clearly stated to him that SRK doesn’t suit the role and he already had some other actor in mind.

John was keen to cast Aamir Khan. He watched a few scenes from the film Dil, which featured Aamir and Madhuri, and felt that Aamir had an honesty in his face and would be perfect for the role of Ajay in Sarfarosh. John stated that another reason to cast Aamir in Sarfarosh was because, till then, Aamir mostly did love stories. He felt that the audience could relate to Aamir as he never did films like Sarfarosh and was quite new to the genre.
