Shah Rukh Khan in Darr is a lover or a rapist? asks educator Dr Vikas Divyakirti; raises questions on Yash Chopra’s films?

Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan manages to grab attention with his exceptional performance in films. He has played a good guy on screen and the few times his spectacular performance as a bad guy won hearts. Shah Rukh Khan has time and again tried to set an example in front of society and made sure his bad guy character did not get a happy ending, to not send the wrong message through his film. Shah Rukh Khan’s role as Rahul Mehra in the 1993 film Darr became a blockbuster movie. His villainous character on screen left fans asking for more. The storyline of the film was about a stalker who was in love with a woman named Kiran and the movie had a song that said ‘Tu haan kar ya na kar, Tu hai meri Kiran’. Well, in a chat with educator Dr Vikas Divyakirti, he raised questions about the film and also spoke his heart out about if the man being glorified here was a lover or a rapist.

Darr directed by Yash Chopra, starred Sunny Deol, Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla in the main roles. In the film, Shah Rukh Khan’s character was shown as mentally unstable who is obsessed with Juhi’s character. Well, recently in a chat with We Are Yuvaa’s YouTube channel, Vikas said that the film ‘tried to show masculine love’. He also said that Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna’s Animal all came much later. Dr Vikas said that despite Juhi’s character saying no, SRK’s character sings ‘Tu haan kar ya naa kar, Tu hai meri Kiran’. Dr Vikas said that the character doesn’t care for her consent. He called it crude masculinity. Further in this entertainment news, Vikas also spoke about the complicit kind of masculinity and gave the example of another Yash Chopra film Kabhi Kabhie. He said that the title song, written by Sahir Ludhianvi which says, ‘Kabhi kabhi mere dil mein khayal aata hai ki jaise tujhko banaya gaya hai mere liye’. Dr Vikas asked ‘what kind of bossiness is this? What a boss has called her down from the star. She doesn’t have her own life? She doesn’t have her own career? Her own dreams? You just have to be the person who gives me a sense of completion, that’s your only purpose on earth’.

Dr Vikas continued saying that men also get objectified sometimes and objectification of men is just as bad as objectification of women. On the work front, Shah Rukh Khan was last seen in Dunki, Jawan and Pathaan. He will be seen in The King with his daughter Suhana Khan. The film also stars Suhana Khan and Abhishek Bachchan. Abhishek will reportedly play a villain in the thriller film. Educator Dr Vikas Divyakirti said Darr film tried to show masculine love and he also said if Shah Rukh Khan in the movie is a lover or a rapist?
