Ten months after Nina Dobrev shared via an Instagram post captioned “RIP boyfriend, hello fiancé 💍♾️” that Shaun White had proposed to her, the pair have called off their engagement. And no, this isn’t the Vampire Diaries and Degrassi star’s way of cheekily saying “RIP fiancé, hello husband” — People has confirmed the pair have broken up after five years together. “It was a mutual decision, and wasn’t an easy one, but it was made with love and a deep respect for one another,” a source close to the pair said. Neither Dobrev nor White has publicly commented on the breakup, but Dobrev didn’t wear her engagement ring on the red carpet at Eternity’s September 7 premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. She has also unpinned the proposal post from her Instagram account.
Dobrev and White first crossed paths at an awards show in 2012 but didn’t get to know each other until seven years later, when they had dinner after both giving presentations at a 2019 event in Florida organized by motivational speaker Tony Robbins. They started dating in 2019 and moved in together during the COVID-19 lockdown. “Nina’s just been so supportive and so amazing through this whole process for me,” White told People in 2022. “Through the pandemic, she was a lifesaver — she really made that time in my life special.” White proposed last October by pranking Dobrev into believing she had been invited to have dinner with Vogue’s Anna Wintour. Maybe now that Wintour is stepping down from some of her editorial duties, she’ll have time to actually make that meal happen?
