Former Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain is speaking up after the BBC dropped her show because she “no longer fit that space anymore.” “The second you don’t fit the box, like they have a neat little box, when you don’t fit that box anymore, there’ll be no space for you,” she said of the network’s choice while on the We Need to Talk podcast. “And I suppose I don’t fit that space anymore. And to be fair, I’m not comfortable in boxes anyway. I prefer a glass ceiling to smash through, thank you very much.” Hussain won GBBO in 2015 and for the past ten years has been putting out cooking shows on BBC. She revealed its decision in a June 6 Instagram video. “The BBC have decided that they didn’t want to commission a show,” she said, per The Independent. “And for me, that was a huge turning point because it’s something I’ve done for the past ten years.”

Hussain also revealed that the BBC was not happy with her Instagram video. “I chose to put that post out because that’s the truth — they chose not to commission my show — but when we were going back and forth as to how to announce that, I got an email back saying, ‘This is a proposed statement and I think Nadiya should say: I no longer want to do my show on the BBC because I’m focusing on different projects,’” she told the podcast. “And I said, ‘That’s not the truth.’”

The BBC sang a different tune in its statement about Hussain’s show. “After several wonderful series we have made the difficult decision not to commission another cookery show with Nadiya Hussain at the moment,” the network said on June 6. “Nadiya remains a much-valued part of the BBC family, and we look forward to working together on future projects.” Maybe not so many future projects now — but, hey, all families fight! Even the “BBC family.”
