Jimmy Kimmel Live! is currently visiting Brooklyn, so you know he had to take time out to hang with Stephen Colbert. The hosts simultaneously broadcast interviews on each other’s shows on September 30, taking time to talk about Kimmel’s suspension, Colbert’s cancellation, and their shared admiration for one another. While on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Kimmel described finding out about his suspension on September 17. “It was about 3:00,” Kimmel described. “We tape our show at 4:30. I’m in my office, typing away as I usually do. I get a phone call, it’s ABC. They say they want to talk to me. This is unusual.” He went to the bathroom to find a private space. “I’m on the phone with the ABC executives and they say, ‘Listen, we wanna take the temperature down. We’re concerned about what you’re gonna say tonight and we decided that the best route is to take the show off the air tonight,’” Kimmel said, to the booing audience. “That’s what I said. I started booing!”

Kimmel said he then walked back into his office and told his executive producers. “I thought that it’s over,” he said. “I was like, ‘I’m never coming back on the air.’” Kimmel’s show was suspended after he joked about the Charlie Kirk shooting and FCC chair Brendan Carr seemingly threatened ABC’s parent company Disney regarding Kimmel, telling them “We can do this the easy way or the hard way.” Kimmel said that his time suspended was “Like a DUI in L.A., three days in jail where I couldn’t say anything. I just had to sit quiet and make a lot of phone calls and take a lot of phone calls.”

Stephen Colbert, meanwhile, went on Kimmel’s show to talk about getting cancelled, recalling when he came home to his wife after talking with his manager for too long. “I said to Evie. ‘Hey, I’m gonna be home later, I gotta talk to [his manager]. Baby, he wants to talk for 15 minutes,” Colbert remembered. “I come home two and a half hours later. I walk into the apartment and she goes, ‘What happened? Did you get cancelled?’ I said, ‘Yes, I did.’”

Colbert also brought a clip of himself finding out that Kimmel had “essentially” been cancelled. In it, a producer brings over Colbert’s phone and shows him, while Colbert’s show is still taping, that Kimmel was suspended. Colbert doesn’t comment on the news itself in the clip but his audience boos. “I’m so happy that your show is back on the air,” Colbert told Kimmel at the end of the interview. “We’ve known each other for over 20 years, but we’ve only really gotten to know each other well the last few years, and I just gotta catch up on getting to know you. The more I get to know you, I admire you as a leader, I know you as a friend, and here’s something I didn’t know, is that you’re funny.” Hey, what’s some ribbing between besties whose job security has been national news?
