Hacks Is Ending With Season 5

It looks like Hacks, the Emmy-winning comedy competing against The Studio and The Bear, will wrap with its fifth season. Hannah Einbinder, who won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy for her role as the put-upon Gen-Z writer Ava Daniels, confirmed the news on the 2025 Emmy Awards red carpet. “We’re going to start filming next week, and knowing it’s the last season is really bittersweet,” she told E!’s Heather McMahan. “But I think it’s right, you know? I think it’s nice to do something as many times as it should be done. Not overstay your welcome.”

The reveal isn’t entirely out of nowhere. Einbinder had hinted at the possibility in a Deadline interview following the season-four finale. “We very much know where we want to end the series; it’s how we pitched the show originally. Right now, we’re still writing toward it ending in the fifth season,” she said. “But we are really in the middle of figuring it out. If it’s not done in five, it’s close to it. But we shall see.” And now, they have seen enough. If anything, the timing feels apt.

Season four, which tracked Ava and Deborah Vance (Jean Smart, also nominated tonight) through the fraught launch of their late-night show, concluded with Deborah back as an underdog, a reset that more or less echoes the finale of each previous season. Still, was Einbinder supposed to let that slip tonight? Had the news dropped weeks earlier, it might have juiced a few more Emmy votes.
