Draft Your Team

Taylor Swift seemingly took control of every corner of pop culture last week with the release of her new album, The Life of a Showgirl, and its corresponding Release Party film event. Two years ago, Taylor surprise-announced her concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, and it dominated the box-office charts for a few October weeks. That time around, we scrambled to add The Eras Tour to the MFL, and anyone who was fortunate enough to draft it got a healthy infusion of early-season box-office points.

This season, we thought it would be too chaotic to add another late-arriving Taylor movie into the MFL, especially since so many players had already selected their squads. Despite the film’s No. 1 placement at the weekend box office, I’m good with it. Release Party opened to $33 million, which is a far cry from the $93 million opening weekend that greeted The Eras Tour. That stands to reason: The Eras Tour was a highly produced version of her record-breaking tour. Release Party was a lot of lyric music videos. But since Release Party did end up at No. 1, the 20 bonus points that typically go to the movie that won the box office won’t be awarded this week. We don’t roll them over to the second-place finisher.

As for movies that are part of the MFL …

The big headline is the second weekend of One Battle After Another absolutely stomping Dwayne Johnson and The Smashing Machine. After opening at No. 1 last week, One Battle picked up another $11 million over the weekend to finish in second place at the box office, pushing its to-date cumulative total to $42 million. That more than clears the $25 million threshold, good for an extra ten points. Weekend to weekend, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Oscar contender only dropped 49 percent, which is a good sign for the film raking in more bonuses in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, The Smashing Machine opened to a hugely disappointing $6 million. The movie about real-life MMA star Mark Kerr had plenty of elements that could have pulled in crowds, chief among them Dwayne Johnson in the lead role. A $6 million debut on 3,300 screens is the kind of public rejection that could end up adversely affecting Johnson’s Oscar push as well.

Elsewhere, Gabby’s Dollhouse reached a $21 million cumulative total (the $25 million bonus is in sight), while The Strangers — Chapter 2 hit $10 million cumulative. Scarlett Johansson’s Eleanor the Great was able to crawl across the $1 million threshold, but if you drafted the June Squibb dramedy, you’re likely looking to the Gotham and Independent Spirit Awards to get you some points.

A few debuts finished under the $1 million threshold for points this week but could make it next week, including the horror movie Bone Lake, the Day-Lewis family affair Anemone, and the documentary Orwell: 2 + 2 = 5.
