According to Nate Bargatze, nobody watched Succession “in the grand scheme of things.” But those who did will have to watch him tonight. The famously milquetoast comedian is hosting the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, where the crème de la crème of post-prestige television are duking it out for a couple shelves’ worth of trophies. Spicing things up around him will be a deep bench of high-wattage presenters, including Parker Posey, Jason Bateman, Kathy Bates, Stephen Colbert (who will no doubt receive an ovation), and Ike “Sal Saperstein” Barinholtz, along with last year’s drama acting winners, Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai.
There’s tons of storylines to track over the course of the night. Will The Studio beat The Bear for the most wins for a comedy series in a single year? Probably, since it took home nine statues at the Creative Arts Emmys, which were held on September 6 and 7. (The Apple TV+ show only needs three to break the record now.) Who will prevail between Severance and The Pitt, which has a nice rivalry going across the drama categories? Will Kathy Bates, already the oldest Emmy nominee for the lead actress in a drama category, make history once more as winner for Matlock? Will Dying For Sex eat into Adolescence’s wins? Will Andor get blanked? (Probably.) Is Jake Gyllenhaal even going to show up? (Update: He’s here!)
So much to do, so much to see. You can find final predictions from our resident expert Joe Reid here, and you can peruse the full list of nominations, which we’re updating as the categories are announced, here. Let’s get going. —Nicholas Quah
