How Ballerina’s Opening Box Office Compared to John Wick

The John Wick franchise has boiled down to one simple question: Ballerina Cappuccina daughter or Cappuccino Assassino son? Thankfully, you don’t actually have to choose, one because those words are nonsense, and two because the new John Wick spin-off Ballerina has both dancing and death. Set between the third and fourth film, Ballerina follows Ana de Armas’s Eve Macarro, a ballerina who trains as an assassin to avenge her father’s death. As of Saturday morning, Ballerina is expected to earn between $25-27 million in its opening weekend at the box office, outperforming the original film but still falling short of the last three releases and its original expectation of $30 million. Overall, Ballerina falls behind Lilo and Stitch, which earned $35 million during its third weekend in theaters.

John Wick’s opening weekend box office has grown throughout each installment’s release. As a new franchise, the first film’s opening earned $14 million in 2014, and when the second film came out, it doubled to $30 million. For the last two releases, Chapter 3 grew to $56 million, and Chapter 4 hit a new record with $73 million. Maybe Ballerina will have her revenge next weekend.
