After two days, Love Island USA’s Yulissa Escobar had left the villa, and if you haven’t been online at all, her departure might come as a shock since there was little to no explanation on the show. To get you up to speed: Soon after her casting announcement, fans uncovered podcast clips of Yulissa using racial slurs and threatened to vote her out immediately. Now that she’s off the island, Yulissa released an apology statement directly addressing the offensive language after several fake apologies began circulating. “In those clips, I used a word I never should’ve used, a racial slur. I used it ignorantly, not fully understanding the weight, history, or pain behind it,” Yulissa wrote on Instagram on June 6. “I wasn’t trying to be offensive or harmful, but I recognize now that intention doesn’t excuse impact. And the impact of that word is real. It’s tied to generations of trauma, and it is not mine to use.” Before she was removed from the show, Yulissa was coupled up with Ace, a 22-year-old Black TikTok livestreamer; he’s now single and can hopefully pair up with a less controversial islander.
