If sports already confused you, I suggest you tap into the world of sporting streaming services. After the swift rise and death of Disney, Fox, and Warner Bros. Discovery’s planned joint sports streamer, Venu, Disney pivoted to releasing an improved counterpart to its current streamer ESPN+. Since 2024, Disney execs have been teasing that a “more robust” ESPN app was in the works, and now, we know that the formerly known as “flagship” app will be called [drumroll] ESPN. Simple, to the point, and easy enough to remember.
An exact launch date hasn’t been announced, but we know it’ll come in August. Revealed along with the name was also a price: $29.99 a month for ESPN or $35.99 a month for the service bundled with Disney+ and ESPN+. The ad-free plan is priced at $44.99. The base price is more than double of what ESPN+ currently costs, but the new ESPN streamer is expected to include more programming than the — now head-scratchingly named — ESPN+ streamer.
But considering ESPN+ is apart of the planned bundle for ESPN, Disney seems confident in keeping both of them. The ESPN streamer is set to feature all of the company’s live games, ESPN’s cable networks, original programs, documentaries, and more. ESPN+’s leagues and live offerings are somewhat limited by comparison. ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro said that execs decided on the new-old name because it was “straightforward.” Just don’t think too hard about that other plus.
